Teledyne Brown Engineering Wins NASA Contract for Space Shuttle, Space Station Support
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Dec. 19, 2000)-Teledyne Brown Engineering announced today it has received a $2.7 million contract from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center to continue providing Engineering, Analytical and Integration Support (EAIS) for Marshall's Glovebox Program Office and Biotechnology Program Office.
The contract is awarded through Marshall's Microgravity Science and Applications Department, and provides for continuation of work that Teledyne Brown Engineering has previously performed under the Payload Mission Integration Contract.
Teledyne Brown Engineering, as the prime contractor, was responsible for the design, development and manufacture of the Space Shuttle Mid-deck Glovebox (MGBX) in 1994. Since then, the glovebox has been a staple on Space Shuttle and MIR flights, and a valuable tool for use in Microgravity Science Research experiments. The MGBX is scheduled for a reflight on Research Mission 2, planned for the spring of 2002.
"NASA has unique needs for these scientific programs, and we're proud of our long history of service to the agency," said Richard A. (Dick) Holloway, president of Teledyne Brown Engineering. "We're also pleased that NASA and Marshall Space Flight Center have once again placed confidence and trust in the people of Teledyne Brown Engineering."
The glovebox fits into the Space Shuttle's mid-deck lockers, and can be used for a variety of tasks during missions, according to Steve Epps, Teledyne Brown's program manager for the MGBX.
"It provides a contained environment aboard the shuttle for experiments that will take place," Epps said. "The MGBX contains the experiment, and it can be isolated from the rest of the shuttle. It also provides power and handles data and cameras for studying the experiment."
